ORCHARD HOUSE
Contemporary Replacement Dwelling
Lymington, Hampshire
This bespoke replacement dwelling reinterprets the strong horizontal lines of the original dilapidated 1960s house, creating a contemporary home that responds sensitively to its surroundings while delivering modern family living.
A dramatic double-height entrance space forms the heart of the home, visually linking the ground and first floors. Feature lighting cascades through the void above the striking central kitchen, creating a strong architectural focal point and enhancing the sense of volume and connection throughout the interior.
The design takes inspiration from traditional gabled forms, reimagined in a contemporary composition with carefully detailed brickwork and a restrained material palette. A bespoke privacy screen sits in front of the expansive central glazing, balancing openness and natural light with privacy from the street.
Modest window openings on the road-facing elevation reinforce this sense of privacy, while the principal living spaces are orientated towards the generous south-facing garden, maximising sunlight and strengthening the relationship between the house and landscape.
Located alongside listed buildings, the project was developed in close collaboration with the New Forest District Council Conservation Team, ensuring the design respects its historic context while establishing a confident and distinctive contemporary architectural identity.
