HAMBLE RIVER

This contemporary riverside home was designed for a highly sensitive site within the strict Crows Port Conservation Area overlooking the Hamble River. The proposal was subject to detailed review by the Winchester Architectural Design Board, requiring a carefully considered architectural response that balanced modern living with respect for its unique setting.

The design takes inspiration from the simple forms and horizontal character of traditional riverside architecture, expressed through a composition of clean white rendered volumes, generous glazing and carefully articulated façades. The arrangement of projecting and recessed elements breaks down the building's mass, creating depth, shadow and visual interest while maintaining a restrained architectural language.

A key objective was to maximise panoramic views across the Hamble River and surrounding landscape. Large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glazing establish a strong connection between interior and exterior spaces, flooding the home with natural light and framing ever-changing views of the water.

To meet the requirements of Part O and ensure comfortable internal environments, the design incorporates integrated brise soleil screening elements. These carefully positioned solar-control features reduce overheating while preserving the openness and transparency of the façades, allowing uninterrupted views and maintaining the home's elegant contemporary aesthetic.

The result is a refined, modern family home that responds sensitively to its conservation area context while embracing sustainable design principles and the exceptional riverside setting.
